Principal’s message

Beau Valley is a small school with a rich history in North Oshawa.

We pride ourselves on being a school with heart as evidenced by a number of community service initiatives undertaken by our students and supported by our school community. Whether it be our annual “Sock-tober” campaign, our “12 Days of Giving” or our most recent support of Cornerstone Community Shelter, the students and community’s generosity shines through.

In recent years, we have made a significant investment into supporting students mental wellbeing including the ability of our pupils to understand their needs and self-regulate. Our students make use of the Zones of Regulation to gauge their readiness to learn and take steps to move into the green zone. In our Intermediate classes, we have also engaged in “Talking About Mental Illness” (TAMI) as a step toward understanding mental wellbeing and breaking down stigma.

In the classroom, our staff and teachers are working hard to improve student achievement in Literacy and Numeracy. Structures such as Guided Practice and the use of various learning tools help our students to be successful and grow as learners.

Among the tools used to support student achievement are a variety of digital technologies. Our board model equips classes from K-6 with technology while our 1:1 model provides each Gr. 7-12 student with a Chromebook. Beyond the variety of apps and sites available on the web, our classes currently use Google Classroom extensively to support teaching and learning both in school and from home.

A key factor in our success as a school is our active parent community. We have many parents who volunteer in various capacities, reading with students, organizing pizza lunches and other fundraisers, or serving on our school community council. We count ourselves lucky to have such a strong and involved parent community.
